Everything begins with a breath. Air is an essential part of life. We enter this world with our first breath. We leave it with a final exhalation. We determine how many breaths lie in between and the quality of the air we breathe every day.

Air is essentially a mixture of various gases—nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and noble gases—as well as water vapor.

And yet, it is so much more…

Air in its many facets

Air, in its many facets, is present always and everywhere. We find it in the desert, by and in the sea (as oxygen within the water), in the rainforest, in the Arctic, in every city, in every car, in every house, and in every refrigerator.
Wherever there is air—or oxygen—there is life. And air quality plays a role in determining our health.

WHAT IS AIR POLLUTION?

Air pollution is a subset of environmental pollution. Under the Federal Immission Control Act, air pollution is defined as an alteration in the natural composition of the air—specifically caused by smoke, soot, dust, fine particulate matter, aerosols, vapors, or odorous substances. In addition to allergens, viruses, and bacteria, airborne household pollutants—such as dust, pet dander, dust mites, mold, and synthetic fragrances found in everyday products—also play a significant role.
Pesticides can also be detected in the air and are transported over long distances by the wind. The World Health Organization (WHO) identifies air pollution—both outdoors and indoors—as the primary environmental risk factor for public health. Indoor air pollution levels are typically five times higher than those outdoors.
It is well established that coarse, fine, and ultrafine airborne particles have adverse health effects, particularly on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. While some of these particles originate from outdoor air pollution, they can also be generated indoors through the combustion of heating and cooking fuels and via reactions involving certain volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

This leads to common health issues such as irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, and can result in catastrophic consequences, including cancer.

POLLUTANTS OF BIOLOGICAL ORIGIN
Microorganisms such as fungi and viruses play a crucial role in the development of various respiratory diseases. Molds release numerous substances that contribute to the onset or worsening of conditions including bronchitis, COPD, pneumonia, asthma, and other allergies. This issue is not limited to indoor spaces in damp, old buildings; it can also occur in new constructions. Since we spend around 90% of our time indoors, maintaining the quality of the air we breathe is extremely important.

What is passive air purification?

Other air purifier manufacturers may have good intentions and succeed in capturing some airborne pollutants—for instance, by using HEPA filters.

However, this also entails a further risk. Passive filter systems collect contaminants in a single location where they can proliferate undisturbed. Particularly when passive air filters are operated intermittently (e.g., 8 hours a day), the accumulated microflora is released back into the air in sudden bursts, effectively turning the unit into a system that distributes pollutants. Consequently, purification occurs only during limited periods of operation.

These layers can cause individual, seemingly harmless substances to form unintended compounds, thereby increasing indoor pollution and creating an unpredictable health risk.
